{"id":16908,"date":"2026-09-22T13:32:22","date_gmt":"2026-09-22T10:32:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pharmacell.gr\/?page_id=16908"},"modified":"2026-09-22T14:09:16","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T11:09:16","slug":"new-research-program-bee-strong-antibiotic-off","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pharmacell.gr\/en\/new-research-program-bee-strong-antibiotic-off\/","title":{"rendered":"New Research Project | BEE STRONG ANTIBIOTIC OFF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;16931&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221;][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;New Research Project | BEE STRONG ANTIBIOTIC OFF&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221;][vc_column_text]<strong>Research and Innovation for Natural Solutions in Lamb and Sheep Health<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new research project <strong>\u201cBEE STRONG ANTIBIOTIC OFF \u2013 Towards Alternative Health Management for Lambs and Ewe Udders through the Development and Use of Innovative Propolis-Based Formulations and Essential Oils from Greek Aromatic Plants\u201d<\/strong> has been approved, with <strong>PHARMACELL S.A.<\/strong> participating within the framework of the <strong>\u201cRESEARCH \u2013 INNOVATE\u201d<\/strong> Action under the <strong>\u201cCOMPETITIVENESS\u201d Programme \u2013 NSRF 2021\u20132027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The project focuses on the development and scientific evaluation of <strong>innovative natural solutions to support lamb and sheep health<\/strong>, leveraging naturally derived bioactive compounds together with advanced production and extraction technologies.<\/p>\n<p>The project aims to contribute to efforts to <strong>reduce the need for antibiotic use in sheep farming<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It forms part of the broader strategic objective of promoting animal health and welfare while supporting a more sustainable model of livestock production.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Greek Biodiversity to Applied Research<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the core of <strong>BEE STRONG ANTIBIOTIC OFF<\/strong> is the utilisation of <strong>propolis and essential oils\/extracts derived from Greek medicinal and aromatic plants<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These natural ingredients are of particular scientific interest due to their bioactive properties, including <strong>antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Within the project, propolis, essential oils and plant extracts will initially be characterised and evaluated under laboratory conditions (<em>in vitro<\/em>) to identify suitable combinations. The resulting formulations will subsequently be evaluated <em>in vivo<\/em> to investigate their efficacy and potential application under real livestock production conditions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prop &amp; Prop+: Development of New Natural Formulations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The research project includes the development of two main categories of formulations:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prop:<\/strong> Propolis-based formulations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prop+:<\/strong> Formulations combining propolis with essential oils and\/or extracts from selected Greek medicinal and aromatic plants.<\/p>\n<p>The research approach covers <strong>three distinct areas of application<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Lamb Nutrition, Growth and Health<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Development of enriched feed for lambs and investigation of the effects of natural bioactive compounds on their growth and overall health status.<\/p>\n<p>Particular emphasis will also be placed on studying potential changes in the <strong>gut microbiome<\/strong>, an area of increasing scientific interest in livestock nutrition and health.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Contagious Ecthyma<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Development of specialised <strong>gel formulations<\/strong> for topical application to lesions associated with contagious ecthyma, with the aim of evaluating their effect on lesion progression and resolution.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> Ewe Udder Health<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Development of liquid formulations for <strong>post-milking teat dipping<\/strong>, with the aim of investigating their potential to support mammary gland health and help prevent problems associated with mastitis.<\/p>\n<p>Through this approach, the project addresses animal health at multiple levels, connecting <strong>nutrition, gut health, topical protection and udder health<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advanced Technologies and Green Extraction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An important aspect of the project\u2019s innovation lies not only in the natural raw materials being utilised, but also in <strong>the methods used to isolate and harness their bioactive compounds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The research approach incorporates advanced and more environmentally sustainable technologies, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ultrasound-assisted extraction<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Use of <strong>cyclodextrins<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Use of <strong>Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Other techniques aimed at improving the recovery and utilisation of bioactive compounds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The application of these technologies connects the utilisation of Greek biodiversity with the principles of <strong>green chemistry and sustainable production<\/strong>, while also exploring the potential for future scale-up to industrial production.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Strong Interdisciplinary Research Consortium<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>BEE STRONG ANTIBIOTIC OFF<\/strong> is based on the collaboration of <strong>four research institutions and three companies<\/strong>, bringing together expertise from different scientific disciplines and the livestock production sector.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>PHARMACELL S.A.<\/strong><br \/>\nKostas Giannakopoulos, Theodoros Kallitsis<\/li>\n<li><strong>UNIVERSITY OF THESSALY<\/strong><br \/>\nCharalambos Billinis (Scientific Coordinator \u2013 University of Thessaly), Vasiliki Mavrogianni (OPSKE Coordinator), Natalia Vasileiou, Dimitris Gkougkoulis, Angeliki Katsafadou, Alexandros Papachristoforou, Vasiliki Spyrou, Dimitris Chatzopoulos<\/li>\n<li><strong>UNIVERSITY OF IOANNINA<\/strong><br \/>\nIoannis Skoufos, Athina Tzora, Chrysoula Voidarou, Sotiria Vouraki<\/li>\n<li><strong>ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI<\/strong><br \/>\nIoannis Mourtzinos<\/li>\n<li><strong>HELLENIC AGRICULTURAL ORGANISATION \u2013 DIMITRA (ELGO-DIMITRA)<\/strong><br \/>\nAikaterini Grigoriadou, Maria Androudi<\/li>\n<li><strong>HELLENIC FEED INDUSTRIES S.A. \u2013 EL.VI.Z. S.A.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>KRIOS FARM P.C.<\/strong><br \/>\nAntonis Politis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The project is structured into <strong>six Work Packages<\/strong>, covering the full research and development pathway: from the selection and production of natural raw materials and the characterisation of bioactive compounds, through laboratory testing and the development of new formulations, to their final evaluation in animals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Role of PHARMACELL S.A.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For <strong>PHARMACELL<\/strong>, participation in <strong>BEE STRONG ANTIBIOTIC OFF<\/strong> is directly aligned with the company\u2019s strategy of investing in <strong>Research &amp; Development and the creation of scientifically substantiated Animal Health &amp; Nutrition solutions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Within the project, PHARMACELL is actively involved in the <strong>development of the final formulations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>More specifically, under Work Package 3 and in collaboration with <strong>EL.VI.Z. S.A.<\/strong>, the project includes the development of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Liquid <strong>Prop and Prop+ formulations<\/strong> for post-milking teat dipping.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prop and Prop+ gel formulations<\/strong> for application to lesions associated with contagious ecthyma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The formulation development process will be based on the results of the preceding laboratory evaluations, enabling selected bioactive compounds and combinations to be transformed into <strong>functional prototype formulations with potential for practical application<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This participation enables PHARMACELL to combine its production and technological expertise with the specialised scientific knowledge of the participating universities and research institutions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Research to New Animal Health &amp; Nutrition Solutions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The philosophy behind <strong>BEE STRONG ANTIBIOTIC OFF<\/strong> extends beyond laboratory research.<\/p>\n<p>The project seeks to establish an integrated pathway <strong>from Greek natural raw materials and scientific knowledge to the development of applicable and potentially marketable products<\/strong> capable of addressing real needs in modern sheep farming.<\/p>\n<p>Through this approach, the project is expected to generate new knowledge regarding the use of propolis and Greek plant-derived bioactive compounds in livestock production and to investigate their potential contribution to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reducing the need for antibiotic use<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Limiting factors associated with the development and spread of <strong>antimicrobial resistance<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Improving <strong>animal health and welfare<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Enhancing the <strong>sustainability of livestock production<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Developing new high-value-added products based on <strong>Greek natural raw materials and Greek scientific expertise<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For <strong>PHARMACELL<\/strong>, the project represents another step in its continuous investment in <strong>scientific knowledge, collaboration with leading academic and research institutions, and applied innovation<\/strong>, with the objective of transforming contemporary research into effective solutions that create tangible value for Greek livestock production.<\/p>\n<p>Through its participation in <strong>BEE STRONG ANTIBIOTIC OFF<\/strong>, <strong>PHARMACELL further strengthens its established presence in applied research<\/strong>, focusing on the utilisation of naturally derived bioactive compounds \u2014 particularly natural resources originating from Greek biodiversity \u2014 for the development of innovative solutions in animal health and nutrition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BEE STRONG ANTIBIOTIC OFF<\/strong> is the <strong>third research project<\/strong> in which the company has participated in this field, following its successful involvement in <strong>MASTiN<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cDevelopment and Application of Edible Intramammary Products for Improving Udder Health in Sheep\u201d<\/em> and <strong>HepaHealthy_Egg<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cNatural Liver Health and Welfare of Laying Hens through the Use of Natural Milk Thistle Extract for the Production of High-Value Eggs in the Region of Central Macedonia.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Through this series of research collaborations, <strong>PHARMACELL is progressively building a coherent body of expertise in the study, evaluation and utilisation of natural bioactive compounds<\/strong>, connecting academic research with applied innovation and the development of new solutions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research.
